Hume & Hovell

As the Mid Century Modern pickings in Banyule are decidedly slim at the present time, I have dug out a few gems that I may have missed in the recent past...

I just couldn't resist entitling this post Hume & Hovell - sorry - but it would sure take a lot of work to bring it up to desirable living standards! 104 Hume Street, Greensborough sold on the 24th November 2012. As it sits on 1065m2 of land so I'm pretty sure it will get demolished to make way for townhouses. I think it's worth including on the blog as a record of what once stood!

Another One!

Another Mid-Century home ear marked for development in Montmorency. When you look at the condition of the house inside - solid timber floors, ducted heating, fresh paintwork, modern kitchen - it makes me cringe that some people would send all of it to the scrapheap, to make money. This is not a sustainable future!

What the house could be with a little 'vision' perhaps? (Instead of 3 ugly townhouses).

Yes Bronte!

I was very excited to see the listing at 25 Bronte Street, Heidelberg last month as it was clear from the photos that this home had been put together by a lover of 'retro' and 'mid-century modernism'. Filled with brave colour and design that enhances the good 'bones' of the building, a fairly humble 50's weatherboard home has been elevated to a stand out property. Bravo owners!!
Fantastic Bold External Colour Scheme - Contemporary but also Enhances the existing Character of the Facade
Key Colour Red brought through to the living room.
and Kitchen - Lovely new plywood ceiling too!

Banks Road Beach House

Love the Vertical Cladding & Skillion Roof
Okay so its a looong way from the beach, but 27 Banks Road Eltham North is exactly the sort of beach house I fantasize about every Summer! It's the 50's style, vertical board cladding and crazy slate floors... Strip off the twee fretwork and brass light fittings and you've got yourself a mid-century beauty.

Oh the Crazy Slate flooring - Love IT!

Whoa Nelly

Another little gem in Greensy! 34 Nell Street Greensborough has been on the market for some time but finally seems to be under offer (sorry folks, a bit slow on this one). Love the articulated facade - no flat square box here.

Such Great Heights

I went for a ride yesterday and took some of snapshots of my two favorite houses in my immediate area. Unfortunately(and possibly typical of me) they are both completely run down and over-grown 60's shacks with skillion roof. Embarrassingly, I think I thought they were the same house until a couple of weeks ago (they are one street apart and in roughly the same position) when i twigged that they were actually different colours.
The White House
Things I love about the White House: Great Chimney, Skillion Roof, Eave lining boards, Window proportions, Pergola over Entry, Recessed position on Block

Yellow House
Things I love about the Yellow House: Chimey, Skillion roof, Covered Entry (Hard to see much else!)

It just breaks my heart to see these two potential beauties fall into a state of disrepair. They could be the most modern houses in Heide Heights, if only I could get my little mits (and some serious cash) on them...

On the Bible I Do Swear...

I spied this classic weatherboard house at 31 Bible Street Eltham for sale through Coventry & Co over the weekend. I just love how naturally light the interior looks. I'm also a sucker for skillion roofs so that might explain the attraction to it. You could really add to the external appearance of the house with a new external colour scheme and perhaps even modifying the rumpus room at the rear with a deck to emphasise the 60's roofline.

Souter Sweetie

While it is certainly not big, this 50's shack at 2/7 Souter Street, Eltham is cute as a button and has potential plus. A new paint scheme inside and out, new window coverings and some inspired garden design would make the world of difference. It is the perfect foot in the door for first home owners and it's listed with Barry Plant Eltham.
New exterior colour scheme and a new garden please!

Briar Hill Blues

Not many properties from the leafy borough of Briar Hill seem to make the Banyule Modern Blog. This 50's cottage at 15 Greenwood Street, Briar Hill (Darren Jones RE) seems to be in completely original condition! A little too original for most tastes but what a time capsule! I've included so many photos because, lets face it, on over 2000m2 of land, this humble houses' days are numbered...

Worthy of a Masterchef?
Got the blues? Try some timber paneling..
Still got the blues? Better have a sit down then..

Try eating something, and if that doesn't work...

Have a lie down - try to sleep it off.

Minties Moment

Currently for sale through Jellis Craig is 17 Pyalong Avenue, Rosanna. Built in 1958, this neat and tidy home will most likely give way to a new development due to the fact that it fronts streets at both ends.

(All Photos Courtesy Jellis Craig Advertising)
MR visited the 'cute as a button' home tonight and was enamored with its original timber windows (not the aluminium one!), light fittings, stone clad fireplace and 'rear' yard. We both love the minty green colour and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the orginal colour scheme. I believe the original owners are selling the property so those interested in the homes history could certainly get the info from the direct source!
