Alistair Knox 'Twins'

Two impressive properties are currently up for sale designed and built by the late, great Alistair Knox. While not strictly falling into the 'Mid-century Modern' category, the use of natural or 'raw' materials and response to site have a relationship to the principles of Modernist design. These two homes are so similar - each with overscale timbers, recycled brick floors, mudbrick walls and generously proportioned spaces. You can read more about Alistair Knox here.

More Knox on the market this week! 177 Progress Road Eltham was designed by Alistair Knox and built in 1970. It features his trademark solid materials of Robertson style bricks and exposed timber beams juxtaposed with extensive glazing. The idea of the 'Hearth' is central to Knox's designs and there are several fireplaces, flanked by terracotta floors and even original bathrooms (which have stood the test of time rather well - concealed cistern toilets and all!!)

Pleasant Paint Job

I confess, I like the dark side... so when I saw this timber clad beauty swathed in black paint at 56 Mount Pleasant Road Eltham, I was sold. To add to its external charms, the open fireplace and polished concrete floors internally. According to the add it also boasts Alistair Knox design and Monsalvat location.

School of Hard Knox

Progress Road - Has a nice ring to it, don't you think? 

Then check out 184 Progress Road, Eltham, recently sold by Barry Plant. I'm not sure if this home was designed or built by Alistair Knox (or both) but what a wonderful example of late 60's design! 

Lovingly cared for by the original owners since 1969, it boasts; fabulous Daniel Robertson bricks, dark painted timber windows & doors, internal slate floors, exposed beams and timber ceilings, original bathroom with timber panelled walls, fantastic open fireplace, north aspect living spaces and the most amazing native garden. Little wonder it was snapped up so quickly!

And to the original owners who preserved it so well - thank you, thank you, thank you!!
